Habana Outpost celebrates African Liberation Day
May 22nd through May 26th

Habana Outpost , New York's first Solar Powered Restaurant and marketplace is honoring the 50 th anniversary of African Liberation Day with several events designed to showcase the culture and people of Africa.  

Some highlights of the four-day event will be:

Thursday, May 22 nd 7-9pm (opening reception)

"Back to My Roots" a photography exhibition celebrating the spirit and people of Ghana presented by documentary photographer, Stanley Lumax Jr.

This exhibition will include an array of photos documenting life in today's Ghana, bringing the viewer on a pulsating journey through a small West African country with an intense history of determination to free themselves form foreign domination and exploitation. Using the camera as his mediator Stanley creates vivid dialogue inviting not only the viewer, but also his inner self to re-discover Ghana.

Designers Market featuring fair-trade crafts from Africa

In Honor of African Liberation Day the Habana Gear store will feature handmade fair-trade crafts from Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa . The purchase of these products supports groups like the Ilala Weavers located in South Africa who help over 2000 Zulu people attain self-sufficiency while retaining the lifestyle and rich heritage.

Kids Corner - Salvaged Music Makers

Every weekend the Kids Corner provides free activities for children, which focus on the environment and recycling. In this workshop, children will learn how to make African drums and rainsticks musical out of items like cardboard tubes and tin cans. Class begins at 12:00pm .

Fashion Show & Fundraiser for Lil' Raggamuffin Summer Camp - Join us for a fashion show featuring the collaborative efforts of four hot Brooklyn t-shirt designers: Rockersnyc, Coup d'etat Brooklyn, 64 Village and, Concep. This group will be selling their designs to raise money for Lil' Raggamuffin Summer Camp which is a summer camp dedicated to educating and uplifting the youth of Jamaica.   The curriculum of the camp includes music, dance, theater, conservation and African history.
